KNEES

By Leon Walder

Dad had pockmarked knees

He and his kid brother

Forced to steal charcoal

From trains in winter

Guarded by SS

Ran on children’s legs with buckets

Sometimes the train moved

Sometimes the buckets fell

Sometimes the child

Yes, my father, I see

Only sometimes you fell.
