KNEES
By Leon Walder
Dad had pockmarked knees
He and his kid brother
Forced to steal charcoal
From trains in winter
Guarded by SS
Ran on children’s legs with buckets
Sometimes the train moved
Sometimes the buckets fell
Sometimes the child
Yes, my father, I see
Only sometimes you fell.

Who is this man that I see?
I see him starring back at me -
a shadow being with eyes of fire
reflecting all my fears and desires
I know his secrets as he knows mine -
our fates it seems are intertwined -
he knows of all the things I had vowed
to never have spoken of aloud
I reach within to draw my blade
to slay this demonic spectral shade,
his darkness is blinding, I cannot see
the shadow of death encompasses me
but my soul it burns with a dragon's flame,
my sword runs him through, he is slain -
darkness has given way to the light within
here I stand before you, a man amongst men

what do you
call this light
that lingers
like a thought
not fully formed
yet sparkles
with the freshness
of significance...
it haunts me
from a place
I've somehow
seen
yet
still
have yet
to know

I’ve stood, at sunrise, on flat military
weapons ranges in CA, AZ, NM,
where my shadow stretched 100ft in
front of me with my back to the sun.
Warming me.
I thought at that momement:
The sun is too bright.
The shadows are too dark
Too long,
There are no gray areas
No wonder we build our weapons
Here.

You’re born into a world dark and cruel,
your mind and strength will see you through.
These woods are cold and the wind is biting but to your last never stop fighting.
As life goes slowly ever onward,
know that when you look upward
there is but one direction; forward.
Of the countless numbers in which you are part, of the many voices, stories and works of art, your lone journey is what sets you apart.
Of the cold and stony shore and its countless stones, Like the dust blown from the oldest of tomes, you will be yet another pile of dry and ancient bones.
Do not despair at the treacherous path
for what you learn will help others pass.

PERTH
No sound save the wind
The curse is now here
False hopes cannot withstand
This harbinger of fear
This time no different
It will become clear
All will be touched
Both distant and near.
A fluttering of wings
In the darkness of light
Approaches day by day
Under cover of night
A signal within noise
Hidden from sight
The Black Swan cometh
Already in flight
